Day 1

We travel north from Kent with a lunch stop on the way in the famous and popular University City of Cambridge with its historic streets, ancient colleges and lovely bridges spanning the River Cam, before continuing on to arrive at our hotel late afternoon, subject to travel. Tea and coffee is served on arrival. A Welcome Drinks reception will be held before dinner this evening.

Day 2

A free morning in Derby where you could choose to visit the 16th Century Cathedral, indoor market or one of the many museums that this great city has to offer. Unique independent shops, great cafés, restaurants and bars, stunning arts and cultural venues and historical landmarks - Derby's Cathedral Quarter has it all.
You could choose to stay in Derby all day if you wish or in the afternoon, join us on a scenic drive into the Peak District National Park taking in Ladybower Reservoir, where the famous 'Dambusters' practised their low level flying techniques before continuing to the charming village of Castleton, known as the 'Gem of the Peaks'.

Day 3

Takes us northwards out of Derby and into the heart of the Peak District as we make for the greatest of the area's visitor attractions, Chatsworth House. The seat of the Duke of Devonshire, Chatsworth has been home to the Cavendish family since 1549.
Situated on the banks of the River Derwent, the Chatsworth Estate overlooks the low hills that divide the Derwent and Wye valleys. The house, set in expansive parkland and backed by wooded, rocky hills rising to heather moorland, contains a unique collection of priceless paintings, furniture, Old Master drawings, neoclassical sculptures, books and other artefacts. Chatsworth has been selected as the United Kingdom's favourite country house several times, and its expansive gardens, farm and parkland adds to the sense of history and timelessness.

Day 4

Set in 150 acres of beautiful wooded parkland and gardens with 50,000 maturing trees and over 300 unique memorials, the National Memorial Arboretum is a beautiful and lasting tribute to those who serve their country or who have died in conflict. It is home to the striking Armed Forces Memorial, the relocated and rededicated Basra Memorial Wall and the Royal British Legion's Never Forget Memorial whose centre point is a beautiful poppy wreath around which Everlasting Poppies are planted. Rich in design and symbolism, and sympathetic to the lush gardens they inhabit, the memorials each have fascinating stories to explore. The daily Act of Remembrance takes place at 11am in the Millennium Chapel and includes a Two Minute Silence, followed by an introduction to the National Memorial Arboretum.
In the afternoon, we head to Lichfield, Staffordshire's premier heritage city, home to the only medieval English cathedral with three spires. The city centre has an attractive old-worlde charm with historic buildings, museums, good shops and restaurants, and the expanses of open water, tree-lined walks and parkland provide a variety of activities in beautiful surroundings. Perhaps visit the magnificent cathedral to discover its hidden treasures.

Day 5

We leave Derby after a relaxed breakfast, breaking for a few hours spanning lunchtime in the wonderful 32 acres of gardens at Upton House, near Banbury. Amongst its many attributes, this lovely garden is one of the National Trust's Top Ten for butterflies! Upton House has full facilities including tea rooms and restaurant, and we will aim to depart at around 2pm to get us back into Kent ahead of peak hour traffic.
