The beautiful English Riviera stretches along 22 miles of stunning South Devon coastline with its cliffs, coves and beaches to explore and enjoy, making it a popular holiday destination for centuries. With its mild climate, the profusion of flowers and subtropical plants, a sandy beach and deep blue sea glittering along the wide sweep of Torbay, Torquay has justifiably earned the title of the Queen of the English Riviera. It is the most glamorous and famous of all the West Country resorts with a palm-tree lined promenade, seafront gardens, a lively harbour and an international marina. It is steeped in history and was the birthplace and home of internationally renowned writer Agatha Christie. Overflowing with vitality and plenty to see and do, there are of course also many delightful tea rooms where you can enjoy a traditional Devonshire cream tea!
What makes Torquay and Babbacombe so attractive as a holiday destination is not just the resort itself but also its pretty setting and its location as a touring centre. The beautiful scenery of Dartmoor and some of The Rivieras prettiest towns and villages are all within easy reach.
Leaving North Kent on Monday morning, we will enjoy a scenic route along the A303, breaking for lunch near Andover and continuing past Stonehenge. We pass through the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and on through Honiton and past Exeter to Babbacombe where we expect to arrive late afternoon. We are greeted with tea and coffee on arrival before we settle-in and look forward to our 3-course dinner. Plus, after dinner enjoy a free bar between 20.00-23.00hrs on selected drinks!D
After breakfast this morning, we will board the Dartmouth Steam Railway at Queens Park Station, Paignton, for our 30 minute return steam train journey to Kingswear. The views of the English Riviera coastline and the picturesque Devonshire countryside are breathtaking. Once we reach Kingswear, we will then board a foot passenger ferry across the River Dart to Dartmouth where we will board our boat for a circular River Cruise around the river and estuary. The cruise takes us to the mouth of the river passing fantastic scenery including Kingswear & Dartmouth Castles, Dittisham village, Britannia Royal Naval College and Greenway House – home to the late Dame Agatha Christie. If we are lucky, we may also get the chance to see varied wildlife such as dolphins, seals, herons, egrets, buzzards and kingfishers. On our return to Dartmouth we will have time to look around the shops or enjoy lunch at one of the many eateries before returning to the ferry terminal for our return ferry and steam train journey to Paignton.B, D
Travel to Saltram House in Plympton. Home to the Parker family for several generations, Saltram is a Georgian jewel rich with original collection and architecture. The Saltram you see today is an elegant Georgian façade built around a much earlier house. It was acquired by George Parker in 1712 and remained one of the Parker family homes until 1957. Outside, there’s a tranquil garden, with 18th century orangery and follies, to explore. After lunch, we depart for Totnes, a delightful market town nestled in the rolling red-earthed hills of South Devon full of heritage including Totnes Castle, a classic Norman motte and bailey with commanding views of the Dart Valley.B, D
