We dedicate our itinerary to the outstanding beauty of the Lake District and the literary inspiration that the Romantic poet, William Wordsworth, derived from the stunning views of the lakes, soaring mountains and stunning valleys.
Departing Kent this morning, with a stop en route in Royal Leamington Spa. With Georgian and Victorian architecture, tree-lined avenues and squares and glorious gardens, Royal Leamington Spa makes a charming place to break for lunch. On arrival at the hotel, you can expect to be welcomed with a cup of tea or coffee while the bags are take to your room.D
Join us on a scenic drive exploring the North Lakes, including Ullswater, Keswick & the Kirkstone Pass. Despite being the second largest lake in the National Park, Ullswater remains the least touched by tourism and the least developed. During our drive, we'll travel over the spectacular Kirkstone Pass to the south of the lake for some of the best views in the whole park.B, D
This morning, we step back to the 1770s and visit the National Trusts' Wordsworth House & Garden, the poet's stunning childhood home in the Cumbrian town of Cockermouth. It is presented as it would have been when he and his sister lived here with their parents in the 18th Century. We can listen to poetry in the summerhouse, visit the Scots Dumpy chickens, explore the heritage vegetable and flower gardens, listen to heart-breaking stories in the cellar and chat to the maid or manservant in the working kitchen before enjoying lunch in the cosy cafe. We will then board our coach and travel to Coniston, where we will board the Victorian Steam Yacht Gondola, an 'unrivalled sailing experience of the Lakes'. We will enjoy the charm of luxury travel, once only experienced by wealthy Victorians, as we take in the spectacular scenery of the Coniston fells.B, D
Today, we make our way to Haverthwaite Station in the picturesque Leven Valley, where we will board a steam train and enjoy a scenic ride to Lakeside Pier at the southern end of Lake Windermere. We will then swap our train for a boat and enjoy a leisurely cruise across Lake Windermere to Ambleside. Our coach will meet us at Ambleside and take us to Grasmere.
Here we will visit the Former home of Wordsworth, Dove Cottage, in the heart of the remote Lake District. Wordsworth lived here from 1799 to 1807 and three of his five children were born here. Stone floors, dark panelled rooms, glowing coal fires and the family's own belongings still occupy this beautiful place of meditation and poetic inspiration. We will enjoy a guided tour of the cottage before taking a stroll through Dove Cottage Garden, a place of refuge and where Wordsworth claimed that his wife 'in imagination…has already built a seat with a summer shed on the highest platform in this our little domestic slip of mountain'. we will then visit the Wordsworth Museum next door and discover the greatest collection of his hand written letters, journals and poems in the world.
After breakfast, we bid farewell to the Lake District and make our journey home, stopping in medieval Lichfield for lunch.B
